. A statute of limitations is a law that sets the maximum amount of time that parties in a dispute have to initiate legal proceedings². The length of time allowed under a statute of limitations varies depending upon the severity of the offense as well as the jurisdiction it is being disputed².


It's important to understand the statute of limitations for different types of cases and jurisdictions so that you can help your clients avoid missing deadlines and losing their right to sue³. In cases involving legal malpractice (professional negligence), the statute of limitations controls how much time the allegedly injured plaintiff has to bring a case against the attorney¹.
